World AIDS Day: What it is and why it matters

December 1st is World AIDS Day. It’s a day when people all over the world come together to show their support for those living with HIV/AIDS, to commemorate those who have lost their lives to the disease, and to raise awareness about the current state of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Here’s everything you need to know about World AIDS Day.

What is World AIDS Day?

World AIDS Day was first observed on December 1, 1988. It was founded by Thomas Netter, an AIDS activist from Switzerland, and Dr. Jonathan Mann, the Director of the World Health Organization’s Global Programme on AIDS at the time. The day was created to:
  • Raise awareness about HIV/AIDS
  • Mobilize political and social action to fight the disease
  • Provide care and support for those living with HIV/AIDS
  • Commemorate those who have lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses

What is World AIDS Day?

World AIDS day is important because it helps keep HIV/AIDS at the forefront of people’s minds. It’s easy for people to forget about a disease that doesn’t seem to be as prevalent as it once was, but there are still millions of people around the world living with HIV/AIDS. In fact, according to UNAIDS, there were approximately 36.9 million people living with HIV in 2018. That’s why it’s so important that we continue to raise awareness and money to fund research and support those who are living with the disease.

How can you get involved?

There are many ways you can get involved in World AIDS Day. Here are a few ideas:
  • Make a donation to an organization working to fight HIV/AIDS such as amfAR or (RED).
  • Get tested for HIV yourself and encourage your friends and family members to do the same. It’s important to know your status so that you can get treatment if necessary and avoid passing the virus on to others.
  • Educate yourself and others about HIV/AIDS. There are still a lot of misconceptions out there about how the virus is transmitted and what life is like for someone living with HIV/AIDS. Take some time today to learn more about the disease and help dispel some of these myths.
  • Wear a red ribbon or (RED) clothing item today in solidarity with those affected by HIV/AIDS. You can also buy (RED) products from participating brands; a portion of proceeds will go towards fighting HIV/AIDS.
  • Attend or volunteer at an event in your community commemorating World AIDS Day. Many communities hold candlelight vigils or other events on December 1st to remember those who have been lost to AIDS and support those who are living with it.
Conclusion: December 1st is World AIDS day—a day when people all over the world come together in support of those living with HIV/AIDS, commemorate those who have passed away from the disease, and raise awareness about its current state. It’s an important day because it helps keep HIV/AIDS at the forefront of people’s minds and reminds us that there is still work to be done in the fight against this disease.

There are many ways you can get involved, including making a donation, getting tested yourself, educating others about HIV/AIDS, wearing red in solidarity, or attending an event in your community commemorating World Aids Day. No matter how you choose to participate, taking action on World AIDS day is one way you can make a difference in the fight against this disease.
