The Power of Legacy: Reflecting on John Amos and Coming to America

Life has a way of bringing us full circle, doesn’t it? Growing up in Nigeria, I couldn’t have imagined how much a movie like Coming to America would shape my love for storytelling and film. It was more than just entertainment—it was a cultural phenomenon. I remember watching it with my family, over and over again, each time finding something new to laugh about. Little did I know that years later, as a producer with Ike Steele Productions, I’d have the honor of sitting down with one of its stars, John Amos, at the 2015 Oscars Night of 100 Stars Viewing Party.

It’s moments like these that remind me of the importance of legacy. John Amos wasn’t just an actor. He was a force of nature—a man whose roles spanned generations, from his powerful portrayal in Roots to the beloved father figure in Good Times, and of course, as Cleo McDowell in Coming to America. He had this incredible ability to bring characters to life with authenticity and grace, while making us laugh and think at the same time.

During our interview, John reflected on the universal appeal of Coming to America. He smiled as I told him how the movie was a hit in Nigeria, where we watched it “a million times.” His response? “That’s the thing that’s so gratifying… People always will want to laugh—the world over, Nigeria, Mexico—the response has been uniform.” It was a beautiful reminder that laughter knows no borders, no limitations. We all need it, and we all deserve it.

What stood out to me the most was John’s deep love for the craft of acting and storytelling. He told me about meeting John Landis, the director of Coming to America, and how he knew instantly that he had to be part of the movie. The passion in his voice was undeniable. He said, “You give that role to anybody else, I’ll kill you!” That’s the energy that brings success—not waiting for life to hand you something, but claiming it with every fiber of your being.

This is where the lesson comes in. John Amos didn’t become a legend by sitting on the sidelines. He believed in himself and his purpose. He stepped into every role with full confidence that he was meant to be there. It’s a mindset that I share in my work as a life coach and mindset transformation guide. It’s not about luck—it’s about knowing your worth, preparing yourself, and showing up, ready to make an impact.

As I reflect on this interview, I’m reminded of the importance of building a legacy. Whether you’re in front of the camera, behind it, or coaching others to reach their potential, it’s about how you show up in life. Are you living with purpose? Are you embracing every opportunity like John did, knowing that you have something special to offer?

John Amos may have left this world, but his spirit lives on. He may have passed away, but his laughter, his wisdom, and his incredible body of work remain with us. And I am deeply honored that Ike Steele Productions had the chance to capture a small piece of his legacy through our conversation. His words continue to inspire me, and I hope they inspire you too.

In this journey of mindset transformation, we must remember that life isn’t just about the roles we play—it’s about the impact we leave behind. John understood this, and his work reflects that understanding. So, the question is, how are you building your legacy?

I encourage you to watch my short interview with John Amos here. It was one of the highlights of my career as a producer, and I’m grateful for the chance to have sat down with such an iconic figure. Let his story inspire you to live your life with intention, passion, and purpose.
